birding, coffee and accommodations.
Panama is one of the favorite
destinations for birding, but birding in
Panama is not complete unless you visit
the Boquete highlands. As suggested in
Robert S. Ridgley's A Guide to The Birds
of Panama, Finca Lerida is a place to go
"searching for quetzals and other
specialties".

Casco Antiguo – the Old Quarter of
Panama City or the second Panama City
We love this area and only wish we
could afford to live here…a mix of
French, Caribbean and other styles.
This area is under going some
beautiful major renovations and the
great thing about it is that they
must keep the facades looking the
time frame…whatever happens behind
closed doors is fine, but the fronts
must maintain that old world feel.
Founded in 1673 after the sacking
and burning of Panama Viejo by Henry
Morgan.
The ‘White House’ or the Presidents
House is also in this area and to
take a tour is easy to arrange…what
an exquisite interior. The President
does not live here any more but does
use it for special functions. This
is just an incredible area to visit
even amidst the ruins…James Bond –
Quantum of Solace was partly filmed
here and we happened to be out
taking a walk with friends when we
happened upon them filming. You will
also find some really nice
restaurants in this area.

Panama Viejo – the First Panama City
These are the ruins of the first
settlement in Panama City, destroyed
by Pirate Henry Morgan in the late
1600’s. They are not that far from
us and we can even see the ruins of
the famous cathedral tower from our
balcony. Well worth seeing…lots of
incredibly old trees with orchids
and other plants making their homes
in the ancient trees. What they have
done as well as use this area for
special events. We went to a
Christmas Music Concert one year and
just recently took in the Yanni
Concert here…what a special place.
By the way, they have discovered six
cannons at the mouth of the Chagres
River that might have belong to the
legendary pirate. The specialists
say that the cannons have the
characteristics of small iron guns
from the 17th century and that they
likely came from his flagship
‘Satisfaction’.

Panama BioMuseum
World famous architect Frank Gehry
has an incredible museum under
construction. I had the opportunity
to see a bit of it as I was at a
meeting that took place in the
building next to it and it is a
place where we drive by every time
we head to the Amador Causeway to
take an early morning walk. I hear
the landscape will be done by a lady
from New York who now lives here…she
loved Panama. I can hardly wait to
see it completed!

short quote from the site "Panama
has some of the best surf spots
in all of Central America! Unlike Costa
Rica, Panama is still virgin and you can
catch most of the best surf spots
by yourself with your buddies. Panama’s
circulating currency is the US Dollar so
there are no currency conversion hassles
or rip-offs. Panama’s prices are still
very low, so you can live like a king
and eat like a pig after hard core surf
sessions for as little as $2 or
sometimes less, depending on where you
are at. "
