More News - Pastor & Pastorcita - our two wards
Pastor & Pastorcita
When we first arrived in Costa del
Este there was a guard shack just across
our little river. We could tell the dog
had white fur but he had such a bad case
of mange that his skin was more red
sores than white fur. We were so worried
about him. We made sure he had food and
we asked the local vet what we could do.
He suggested we use some medication and
make sure he was bathed. The security
guards were really helpful but over the
ensuing weeks we didn't see much if any
improvement. Honestly we didn't think he
could ever get better. He would just sit
and scratch. He looked so miserable.
Finally out of desperation we asked the
vet if he could pick him up and see what
he thought of his chances. To our
surprise the vet not only picked him up
but he told us he'd seen worse. We just
couldn't imagine what could have been
worse. He began treating him and after a
week or so he let him go back to the
shack with the guard. He did look better
but not totally recovered. Over the next
year we saw him improve but it took a
few more times in the vet to see the
mange disappear all together. Sometime
later we noticed a small dog hanging
around the guard shack and she had a bit
of limp so we had the vet check her as
well and we added her to our care.
During the beginning of this year the
area decided to tear down the guard
shack and we worried about where the two
dogs would end up. One of the security
guards said he knew of a family that
worked in the area doing maintenance at
the water treatment plant. So we met
Chito and he agreed to take and care for
Pastor and Pastorcita. After a few
months here is what they look like now.
Amazing isn't it - they look fantastic.
They live a little enclosure during the
day but at night Chito opens the
enclosure and they get the full run of
the area. Here are some pictures
of us visiting this weekend.
